Welcome to May’s edition of Mom’s Reading Corner!
Last month, we dove into a suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat mystery with Sworn to Silence.
This month, we are taking a completely different turn—into something playful, clever, and delightfully unexpected.
May’s Recommendation: A Daughter of Fair Verona by Christina Dodd
🎧 Audiobook length: 8 hours, 20 minutes
📚 Genre: Rom-Com Mystery with incredible flair
💛 Best for: Those looking for laughter, love, murder, and something completely fresh
I was all set to graduate with an MBA—yes, I was firmly headed down the business path.
That was the plan.
Practical, structured, predictable.
Then I made what felt like a small decision at the time: I chose Shakespeare for one of my English credits.
And I fell in love.
Not just a casual appreciation—but the kind where you suddenly realize how clever, layered, and honestly funny those stories are.
I am one of those slightly goofy gals who finds the origin of phrases like “a pound of flesh” not just interesting, but sly, witty, and impressive.
(If you want to revisit it, The Merchant of Venice is absolutely worth your time!)
So when I picked up A Daughter of Fair Verona, it felt like slipping right back into that world—but with a fresh, modern twist that made it even more fun.
A Familiar Story—With a Delicious Twist
We all think we know the story of Romeo and Juliet—the tragic love story that has been told and retold for generations.
Except… what if that ending wasn’t actually the end?
In A Daughter of Fair Verona, they didn’t die.
Instead, they lived—and according to their daughter, they loved loudly, dramatically, and a little excessively.
Their legendary romance didn’t fade into poetry; it became the foundation of a very lively household… with seven children.
Yes, seven.
And at the center of it all is Rosaline, their eldest daughter, who has had a front-row seat to this epic love story her entire life.
Rosaline: Not Buying Into the Romance
Growing up surrounded by the most famous love story in history has made Rosaline… skeptical.
She has seen what “true love” looks like up close—and instead of longing for it, she’s decided it’s simply not for her.
After all, how could anything compare? Why settle for less than legendary?
So she doesn’t.
Every time a suitor comes calling or her parents try to arrange a betrothal, Rosaline finds a way out.
And not quietly, either.
She’s clever, stubborn, and just obnoxious enough to make sure no arrangement ever sticks.
It’s honestly one of the most entertaining parts of the story—watching her outmaneuver expectations at every turn.
And Then… Everything Changes
Of course, things don’t go according to plan-there has to be a story, afterall.
Rosaline suddenly finds herself promised to a man that half of Verona seems to want dead.
Not exactly ideal—and definitely not avoidable this time.
But just when things seem complicated, they turn downright chaotic.
Her betrothed shows up at a ball… with a dagger in his chest.
From there, the story unfolds into a swirl of mystery, humor, and unexpected emotion.
There’s danger, confusion, and just enough drama to keep you guessing—but it never loses that light, witty tone that makes it so enjoyable.
And somewhere in the middle of all that chaos, Rosaline starts to question the one thing she thought she had completely figured out.
Love.
Why This One Is So Much Fun
One of the things that makes A Daughter of Fair Verona so enjoyable is the voice.
It has that playful, slightly dramatic flair that feels like a nod to Shakespeare without ever being difficult or heavy.
It’s clever, but approachable.
Dramatic, but funny.
Romantic, but not overly sentimental.
And as an audiobook? I
t’s even better.
The narration brings Rosaline’s personality to life in such a vivid way that it almost feels like you’re listening to a performance rather than just a story.
The humor lands perfectly, the pacing feels natural, and it makes it incredibly easy to stay engaged—even when you’re multitasking.
Which, let’s be honest, is exactly what most of us are doing.
A Little Bit of Everything (In the Best Way)
If you’re someone who struggles to choose between genres, this book makes it easy.
It’s a rom-com that actually makes you laugh.
It’s a mystery that keeps you curious.
It’s a fresh take on a classic story that feels both nostalgic and new.
There’s something really satisfying about a book that doesn’t take itself too seriously while still giving you a story you want to keep coming back to.
And this one absolutely delivers on that.
I waited with baited breath for the second book to come out-Thus With a Kiss I Die, and yes, it was fantabulous as well!
There’s something unexpectedly delightful about revisiting a world you once loved and finding it completely reimagined in a way that still feels true at its core. That’s exactly what A Daughter of Fair Verona does—it brings back that Shakespearean spark, but with humor, mystery, and a heroine who refuses to follow the script.
It’s the kind of story that makes you smile while you’re listening, keeps you guessing just enough, and leaves you thinking about it long after you’ve hit pause—usually while juggling a dozen other things.
And honestly, that’s exactly the kind of book that belongs in Mom’s Reading Corner.
“What’s in a name? … a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”
~Romeo and Juliet
