March Book Recommendation for Moms: Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo (Kate Burkholder Series)
A Gripping Mystery Thriller with a Strong Female Lead, Amish Culture, and the Perfect Audiobook for Busy Moms
Welcome to the second edition of Mom’s Reading Corner!
Last month, we spent time with a book club favorite in general fiction, Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt — a tender, character-driven story that stayed with us long after the last page.
If you missed it, it’s still absolutely worth adding to your list.
But March’s recommendation is going to feel a little different… a little darker… and a whole lot more suspenseful.
Sworn to Silence by Linda Castillo
🎧 Audiobook length: 11 hours, 45 minutes
📚 Genre: Mystery–Thriller
💛 Best for: Anyone who loves a strong female lead, a gripping mystery, a little spine-tingling suspense, and a rich cultural backdrop.
I have always loved books that are part of a series.
There’s something comforting about settling in with characters you know you’ll see again.
I love getting to know them deeply, watching them grow, witnessing their struggles and triumphs, and seeing how their lives unfold over time.
Series feel a little like friendships — the more time you invest, the richer they become.
The Kate Burkholder series by Linda Castillo has been especially rewarding for me — not just because of the mysteries, but because of the cultural depth woven throughout each story.
In Sworn to Silence, we meet Kate Burkholder, who has just been hired as the Chief of Police in Painters Mill, Ohio — a small town with a population that includes both “English” (non-Amish) and Amish families.
Kate herself grew up Amish.
She most likely got the job not just because she is qualified — but because she uniquely bridges two worlds.
She understands the customs, the language, the unspoken rules, and the deep-rooted traditions of the Amish community.
The hope is that people may trust her enough to come forward, to speak honestly, and to believe she truly understands them.
And that tension — living between two worlds — is what makes this story so compelling.
This is an excellent starter for a series because while it absolutely delivers on the thriller front — a brutal killer is targeting members of the Amish community — it also digs deep into Kate’s personal history.
We learn why she left the Amish faith.
Leaving wasn’t a small decision.
It meant losing her family.
Losing her friends.
Losing her identity.
It meant that everything she once knew — every tradition, every relationship, every support system — was suddenly gone.
For a young adult to walk away from that is monumental.
As the investigation unfolds and Kate hunts down the killer lurking in Painters Mill, we begin to see that the case threatens more than just the town’s safety.
It threatens to expose Kate’s own secrets — secrets that could unravel everything she’s built since leaving her former life.
Through the mystery, we also witness the cost of her decision.
The isolation.
The betrayal.
The quiet grief.
And the strength it takes to stand firm in who you’ve chosen to become.
That combination — suspense layered with emotional depth — completely hooked me.
I was more than ready to “eat up” the next book… and the next… and the next.
Currently, there are 17 books in the series — and they have all been aahhmazing.
Each one builds on the last, deepening the characters and raising the stakes while still delivering that satisfying mystery-thriller punch.
And because this Reading Corner is designed with busy moms in mind…
I cannot recommend the audiobook enough.
The narration is fabulous — immersive, expressive, and perfect for multitasking.
I listened while driving, folding laundry, walking, cleaning the kitchen — and suddenly those everyday tasks felt a little more exciting.
Even better?
I borrowed them for free from my local library using the Libby app. If you haven’t tried Libby yet, it’s a total game changer.
So if you’re craving something gripping this month — something that keeps you guessing while also pulling at your heart — Sworn to Silence is a fantastic place to start.
Until next time… when we trade in suspense for sunshine and explore a fun romance set in Italy.
